Kocaeli's capital, İzmit, was founded in 262 BC making this a rich historical area. However, it is known primarily for the devasting earthquake that took tens of thousands of lives in 1999. There is now a church with its own building.
An international group of 18 adults and 4 children partnered with the church in İzmit to hold a week of meetings to foster "international friendship." Responding to the thousands of flyers distributed by the team, the two musical international nights brought more than 30 people each time. A highlight was the "Tea and Chat" day that brought more than 25 people, majority students, to meet the team. At one point, there were at least ten different groups of people in the church, hearing the gospel from local believers or from foreigners via translation. The pastor rejoiced especially that thousands of people now knew there was a church in İzmit!
